Lighthouses in Nova Scotia

In summer of 2022, I finally decided that I was going to try and visit as many lighthouses as I could in Nova Scotia.

There’s a lot.

Many lighthouses are on islands and would require a boat or helicopter to visit and I’m not in a position to do that yet – maybe not ever. So, the first way I had to organize this was by asking myself: “Can I actually get there?”. Then I decided that my first year would focus on mainland Nova Scotia. Cape Breton is far enough away that the lights on this island will take some serious planning to visit.

So, what I have started here are lights on the mainland for which I’ve been able to capture images so far. It’s been over a year now and I still haven’t captured all the mainland lights, but it’s a pretty good start.

Before jumping in, you will definitely want to check out the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society’s page.

https://www.nslps.com/

You’ll find tons of history and information on all the lighthouses in Nova Scotia, even ones which have been lost to time.

There are also a few books you will want to check out. The first one of these is Lighthouses & Lights of Nova Scotia: A Complete Guide.

This really is a comprehensive look at the state of lighthouses in Nova Scotia at the time of publishing. Rip Irwin is the author and was the founding president of NSLPS.
