Eddy Point
NOTE: this lighthouse was removed by the Coast Guard in 2003. Currently two range marks stand on the point.
Eddy Point is located in Guysborough County, at the entrance to the Strait of Canso from Chedabucto Bay. It is roughly 30 minutes drive from the town of Guysborough and 15 minutes drive from the Town of Mulgrave.
When you arrive at Eddy Point, you can turn off Route 344 on to Sand Point Road out to where the lighthouses once stood. This is where you will find the current range markers and be able to see additional range markers in locations throughout the Strait.
I visited the point mid-afternoon of October 8, 2022. It was pretty much dumb luck and poor vision that brought me to Eddy Point. While mapping out my trip, Eddy Point eluded me. I had only an approximate location thanks to a high-level map on the NSLPS site. Google Maps actually shows the area as “Sand Point” but I didn’t know this at the time. I did note that there was an Eddy Cove on the map and figured if there was a chance that the sites were wrong it would be close by. While I was driving, and the weather was getting less and less predictable, I noticed a short road leading out to pier so I took it. It was mostly so that I could pull off the road and regroup for the last portion of the day. But, when I looked out I saw a tiny triangle of white with a smudge of red and thought – ‘wait, there it is…the websites were wrong, there is a lighthouse standing!’
I took a few pictures, hopped in the car and double-backed until I found what looked to be the right road out to the water. When I got out to the point, I found it – not a lighthouse but one of the two range marks that replaced it. It was a very cool location so I decided to stay and stroll around the rocky point and I’m glad I did.
At this part of the trip the weather was on the edge of turning and indeed did begin to rain as I left and headed toward Mulgrave on Route 344. I pulled over to take pictures of the two range marks that are partnered with the pair on Eddy Point. Those marks were on either side of the road and you can see a photo of each on this page.
Even without a lighthouse, Eddy Point is worth a visit. You are offered a panoramic view of the entrance to the Strait of Canso. At the time of writing Lighthouses and Lights of Nova Scotia, Rip Irwin said that “Eddy Point is the only location within Guysborough County listed in the Nova Scotia Does and Dreamers Guide as a land-based whale-watching destination.”
Unfortunately, I did not catch a glimpse of while while exploring Eddy Point.
With one exception in which I tried to replicate a “film look”, these photos were only minimally processed with minor enhancements to highlights and exposure.
